Why bad things happen to people?
Scripture teaches about the "fall" of man. When Adam bit the
apple in disobedience to God's instructions, scripture teaches that
sin entered the world, and with sin came death. In that moment two
types of evil pervaded God's creation: Moral evil (e.g., lies,
murder, rape) and natural evil (e.g., earthquakes, cancer,
mosquitoes). Nobody is immune to the effects of evil, and sin is a
dynamic and powerful thing ~ it creates slaves to itself. Suffering
any particular evil may or may not be a result of sin in a person's
life, but it is definitely a result of the "fall." Before the
"fall," Adam and Eve had
a choice ~ they could sin or not sin. After the "fall," nobody has a
choice ~ we all sin. However, Christ breaks the power of sin and if a person has Christ in their life they once again have a choice ~
to sin or not to sin. Yet everyone suffers from the result of sin in
the world, and everyone will eventually die because of it. (See
Genesis chapter 3; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12; Romans 6:16; Romans
6:20-22.) Fortunately, death isn't the end of the story.
What it means to "be saved?"
Death isn't the end of the story because after we die, scripture
teaches we'll face one of two locations ~ heaven, or the other
place. Scripture teaches that we're all born in sin ~ that is to
say, my mother didn't have to teach me to lie, cheat and steal. It
came naturally ~ I was born with it. Scripture also teaches that sin
separates us from God. So we need some way of getting cleaned up
from sin if we want to enjoy God's presence in our lives. The
problem is that in and of ourselves, we don't have the ability to
get cleaned up. Worse, merely "being religious" isn't nearly enough
to make God happy with us. So God provided His solution to our sin
in the death and resurrection of His son, Jesus Christ. Christ took
the hit for us. If we accept Christ's death as paying the price of
our sin, if we repent of our sin and invite Christ to be our Lord
and Savior, then on the merit of Christ's payment of our debt, God
forgives our sin, considers us cleaned up, and better yet, God
considers us family ~ His sons and daughters. When Christ
comes into our lives he sweeps out the cobwebs and gives us a brand
spankin' fresh new life. (See Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Romans 5:8;
Romans 10:9-10; II Corinthians 5:17.) Being saved
by Christ is the best way to live; and the only way to die.
